General Description
The Thermal ArcTM 250 GTSW is a AC/DC arc welding
power source with Constant Current (CC) output char
acteristics. The unit is equipped with a gas control valve,
lift arc starter, and high-frequency arc starter for use with
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). This unit is designed
for use with Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas
Tungsten Arc Welding - Lift Start (GTAW), Gas Tungsten
Arc Welding - Pulsed (GTAW-P) and Gas Tungsten Arc
Welding- Sloped (GTAW-S) processes. A digital amper-
age/voltage meter is optional.
The 250 GTSW series offers the highest value
and performance in TIG welding power sources.
The
design of the 250 GTSW offers both AC/DC TIG Welding
and handles just about any job with full range capability
from 250 amps down.
Scope of Manual
This manual contains installation, operating and first ech
elon maintenance procedures for the Model 250 GTSw
AC/DC Inverter Arc Welders. Service to this equipment
is restricted to properly trained personnel; unqualified
personnel are strictly cautioned against attempting re
pairs, at the risk of voiding the Warranty.
Read this manual thoroughly. A complete understand
ing of the characteristics and capabilities of this equip
ment will assure the dependable operation for which it
was designed.
Inverter TIG power supplies allow for incredible control over
the entire range, making them perfect for the most delicate
welding.
The 250 GTSW yields welds with superior purity
and exceptionally clean appearance, as well as x-ray qual
ity welds on all metals.

Effect of Wave Balance Adjustment on AC/GTAW-Complete Welding Control
The 250 GTSW AC output uses a manually adjusted bal
ance control. this control of the wave form changes the
amount of time spent on DCEP ('cleaning') and DCEN
('penetration) parts of each cycle, increasing arc stability.
The DCEP cycle insures that the aluminum oxide is thor
oughly removed, allowing the DCEN cycle a thorough pen
etration of the base metal. Both cycles enhance weld quali
ty and significantly improve performance.
When a conventional system changes its wave balance, there
can be as much as a 50% increase in amperage draw. T
hermal Arc's 250 GTSW amperage draw is unaffected by
any adjustments. The 250 GTSW increases efficiency and
eliminates tungsten spiting and enables the use of a smaller
diameter tungsten electrodes to operate at higher Current lev
els. Figures 1 & 2 show the difference in the TIG torch elec
trode and heat and cleaning variations.
