Description
Welcome!Offered... an exceptional example of an especially fine Zuni butterfly bolo with outstanding mosaic inlay work, dating as far back as the 1940s to early 50's. It was made before the Bennett closures came into use and has a hand made compression device on the back to hold the leather ties. The inlay is done with gorgeous rich green turquoise that probably greened quite a bit with age and rare orange abalone shell which was used before spondylus shell, and mother of pearl and jet and the workmanship is wonderful. The coloration is splendid and finding one with this age and beauty is rare, especially in this size. The ones with this age were often tiny. This is one that was made to be seen and loved; not large but larger
than usual for the time. Possibly made for a tribe member, custom made, to be worn at ceremonials. It's a knock out.
The dimensions of the butterfly are about 2" high and about 2-7/16" wide. The handmade old lovely original tips are a bit over 2" tall, the perfect aesthetic relationship to the bolo. The leather is old but as of this writing still has use and seems original, measuring about 37" long end to end with the tips. The butterfly has hand made raindrops and twisted wire. It's in fine vintage, wearable and collectible condition despite the age appropriate wear to the stones which include several hairlines but nothing endangering the integrity of the piece. The hairlines are not noticeable to me outside magnification. It is unsigned and I don't know who made it; that is usual for pieces this old. It's also not marked for silver content which is also usual for pieces this old, but guaranteed to be at least coin silver. If anyone knows who made it, of course I'd love to know.
This is one of the nicest butterfly bolos I've seen. I recommend it for the best collections. This is a museum worthy bolo. It's become a great favorite of mine. It's gorgeous.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target.
