  • Condition: The Rare POMADE BEAR BOSTON & SANDWICH BEAR Black Milk Glass Covered Jar Dish is in fairly good condition- there is a ½ x ¼ inch sliver chip and some fretting on the bottom of top outside rim, and some minor fretting to the inside rim; and the top rim of the bottom has extensive chips and fretting- the edges have been worn smooth over time. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing. Overall, this work is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations.     POMADE BEAR JAR, BOSTON & SANDWICH BEAR Black Milk Glass Covered Dish, c1860 #2
    This is a rare and very collectible Antique POMADE BEAR BOSTON & SANDWICH BEAR Black Milk Glass Covered Jar Dish, from the mid-19th Century.
    This rare Antique Amethyst-Black Milk Glass Covered Jar Dish:
    - is of a well-modeled Grease Bear in high relief depicting a Bear in an upright position, standing on haunches. The bear’s head is the lid; he has a muzzle, head strap and collar. The base forms the body; front paws in front; back legs are tucked under the body and feet out front;
    - has a narrow-raised rim edge under the base, elevating the base slightly;
    - has a fitted rim between top and bottom; the cover has an inside rim projecting downward from the top so that it slips neatly inside the edge of the base to hold it secure;
    - is mold formed pressed glass, well modeled in deep relief with very good design and detail, and is
    Amethyst-Black Milk Glass with opalescence and “fire”;
    - this bear is in fair shape with losses- historically, a knife would be used to pry open the lid to get to the bear grease pomade, and this one has survived nicely with some loss- his head cocks to one side due to chip losses;
    - is unmarked on the bottom.
