    Description

PAIR OF DUGAN GLASS BLUE BEADED SHELL NEW YORK PATTERN SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS
These little beauties are a pair of antique Victorian era glass salt and pepper shakers.
This pattern is commonly known as “Beaded Shell” or “Shell” but the original pattern name appears to be “New York”.
It was made by Dugan Glass in the former Northwood factory that was located in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
They are made in a lovely sapphire blue color and have what appear to be the original lids (the lids appear to me to match the lids in the below mentioned book photo).
The color of the glass is a bit deeper and darker blue in reality than is shown in my photos.
The shakers are decorated with hand painted gold trim and are not easy pieces to find in this color with the gold decoration.
The pieces in my photos are the actual pieces you will receive.
Please be sure to read the “Age and Condition” paragraphs below.
Pieces from this pattern are pictured in the book
Dugan/Diamond: The Story of Indiana, Pennsylvania, Glass
, by William Heacock, James Measell and Berry Wiggans.
This same pair of shakers, in this same color, are is pictured as photos # 181 on Page 88 of this book.
    Beautiful and desirable little pieces!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.

    Age and Condition
    Circa 1905.
A few words about hand-made glass:
Since each piece is individually hand-made there may be slight imperfections such as whether the piece sits perfectly level or is perfectly symmetrical.
There may also be some minor variations in color between pieces and factory blemishes created in the process of making the glass such as tool marks, straw marks, acid runs as well as bubbles, tiny stones and tiny black ash specs internal to the glass.
I will not mention these unless I notice them during checking or photographing the glass.
None of what I have mentioned in this paragraph is in any way considered damage.
The shakers are both in very good to excellent original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
The top of the glass on both shakers is rough and sharp, they were not ground down at the factory (seems to me to be fairly common on blown shakers of this era).
Neither shaker shows any cloudiness but both have wear to the gold trim.
Both lids show tarnish to the metal, especially the salt shaker lid (it has bigger holes than the pepper shaker lid) on which most of the plating has disappeared over the years.
Neither lid tightens up on the glass threads, but someone added thread around the glass threads on the pepper shaker so it does now seem to tighten okay.
The lid on the salt shaker slides right down over the threads and is quite loose, so it is possible this lid is not original to that shaker.
There is some slight wear to the underside of the feet where the shakers sit that is consistent with the age of these pieces and exactly what I would expect to see on pieces of glass of this age.
I see no other condition issues.
The shakers are really in exceptional condition for pieces of glass over 100 years old.
Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8X-10X times normal, so anything you see will look 8X-10X times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
Each shaker is about 2” (5.1 cm) in diameter and sits about 3.125” (7.9 cm) off the table at the top of the lid.
    Approximate Weight
About 6.375 ounces (182 grams) for the pair.
