Description
JEFFERSON GLASS CANARY OPALESCENT IRIS WITH MEANDER PITCHER & 4 TUMBLERS EAPGA beautiful water set of early American made glass in the form of a lovely water pitcher and four (4) tumblers (5 total pieces of glass and commonly called a “water set”).
They are all made in the very desirable canary or vaseline opalescent colored glass.
These are all quality pieces of pressed glass made by the Jefferson Glass Company formerly of Steubenville, Ohio.
The pattern is called Iris with Meander.
This pattern is pictured and described in the book
Encyclopedia of Victorian Colored Pattern Glass Book II Opalescent Glass from A to Z
by William Heacock.
The water pitcher is pictured in this book as Photo # 139 and listed as scarce in the price guide.
The tumbler is pictured as Photo # 155
It is a gorgeous set as you can see from the photos!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.
Age and Condition
These pieces date to circa 1904 and have been in our personal collection since the year 2000.
A few words about hand-made glass:
Since each piece is individually hand-made there may be slight imperfections such as whether the piece sits perfectly level or is perfectly symmetrical.
There may also be some minor variations in color and factory blemishes created in the process of making the glass such as tool marks, straw marks, acid runs as well as bubbles, tiny stones and tiny black ash specs internal to the glass.
I will not mention these unless I notice them during checking or photographing the glass.
None of what I have mentioned in this paragraph is in any way considered damage.
The set is all in good condition with no damage other than the items I mention below, which is about what I would expect to see on close inspection of 100+ year old pieces of glass.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of these items.
On the pitcher I see numerous straw marks (particularly on the foot) and a bubble in the handle.
The top rim is perfect.
There are a couple of very minor flea bites to the pattern around the body.
There is one place on the foot that is slightly rough where two straw marks intersect and it appears there is a tiny fracture of the glass there (this can be seen in the close-up of the pitcher foot at about the 8:30 clock position).
There is also noticeable wear to the underside of the foot that I would expect to see on a piece of glass of this age.
The top rims of all of the tumblers are perfect.
There is a small chip to the foot of one tumbler (see the eighth photo) and there are some flakes to pattern around the body of all 4 (see the last three photos for some close-ups).
There is also wear to the underside of the foot on each tumbler that I would expect to see on pieces of glass of this age.
None of the damage I have mentioned is significant in my mind, nothing I wouldn’t expect to see on close inspection of 100+ year old pieces of glass.
All five of the pieces ring like a bell all over when I tap them with my ring.
This is a very nice set and in good condition for its age.
Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8X-10X times normal, so anything you see will look 8X-10X times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
Approximate Dimensions
The pitcher is about 5” (12.7 cm) in diameter and sits about 8.5” (21.6 cm) tall at the spout.
The tumblers are about 3.125” (7.9 cm) in diameter and sit about 3.75” (9.5 cm) tall.
Approximate Weight
The pitcher is about 4 pounds 3.25 ounces (1.904 kilograms).
The tumblers are about 10 ounces (283 grams) each.
